WASHINGTON - The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States salutes the life of U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), who passed away today at age 89. A life member of VFW Post 493 in Nutley, N.J., the senator served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1942-1946, and would use his GI Bill to obtain an economics degree from Columbia Business School in 1949. The five-term senator was the last World War II veteran to serve in the United States Senate.
“America lost a friend today,” said VFW National Commander John E. Hamilton. “Senator Lautenberg served our nation with distinction as a patriot who took care of fellow veterans, the troops and their families. May he rest in eternal peace.”
