Gary Hammonds served in the Marine Corps for six years and was deployed to Iraq twice during his time in the service. The skills he learned helped prepare him for his transition to becoming a student veteran, while also carrying out his responsibilities as a husband and father of three.
After depleting his GI Bill benefits, Gary applied for the VFW “Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship” to help him cover the cost of completing his Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology.
Gary was surprised to find out he was selected for a scholarship, along with 42 other service members and veterans.
But to Gary, the scholarship was worth far more than $5,000; it gave Gary and his family some peace of mind. “This scholarship has helped me alleviate some stress, not only for me, but my family as well,” he said. And it gets him one step closer to completing his degree without taking on student loan debt.
The VFW “Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship” provides service members and veterans like Gary with the financial assistance they need to complete their educational goals without incurring excessive student loan debt. It’s just another way the VFW and Sport Clips say “thank you” to those who deserve it the most. Click here to learn more about the scholarship.
