VFW Post 4709 in Conroe, Texas, recently donated $3,000 to a veteran-service organization.
Post Commander Floyd Stewart, who served in the Army during Vietnam with the A Co., 1st Bn., 7th Cav. Regt., 1st Cav. Div., as a radio operator, said Post member Ashley Taylor works with Tri-County Behavioral Healthcare’s Veteran Services program in Texas.
“She had made mention if we ever saw fit or had funding available that they could use a non-discretionary donation,” Stewart said.
The funds came “from our donations to the Post,” according to Stewart, who said the donation “means a lot.”
“We work very closely with that organization,” Stewart said. “Every month we do some type of programming with them or go to an event with them.”
One of those programs is part of VFW’s Mental Wellness Campaign event called “A Day to Change Direction” and is being held in conjunction with the Post.
The Post will hold a suicide-awareness training program from 1-3 p.m. Oct. 8 at its bingo hall. Members also will conduct a “stigma-fighting balloon release.” The balloons, according to Stewart, will have messages written on them.
