Award is among 133 others earned by VFW publications

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The VFW is pleased to announce it has been named the recipient of the 2016 Quill & Badge Award for its
March issue of VFW magazine. The annual award recognizes journalists and others who have written or produced information for the general public that provides an accurate picture of the men and women dedicated to careers in law enforcement.
The award-winning March issue featured five articles which highlighted the significant contributions veterans have made to the law enforcement community. Further, the cover photo and title for the full magazine placed veterans serving as law enforcement officers front and center with the bold title, Veterans in Law Enforcement, A Force for Good.
“VFW magazine, as well as the organization as a whole, is honored to receive the prestigious Quill & Badge Award from the International Union of Police Associations (IUPA) and its educational affiliate, the Institute for Police Research,” said Richard K. Kolb, editor-in-chief of VFW magazine. “Being recognized by the IUPA’s 100,000 members, many of whom are fellow veterans, is reward in itself. But to be grouped with past award recipients who top the list of U.S. news media personalities and outlets is extra special.
“Producing the special March 2016 issue on veterans in law enforcement was VFW’s opportunity to say thanks to the nearly 1 million Americans who serve in this dangerous career field. It was especially appropriate to do so on the 50th anniversary of the creation of VFW’s own recognition program for law enforcement officers.”
The Quill & Badge Award is among the 130 awards earned by the VFW Publications Department. Those awards have included the Association Media and Publishing Excel Award for special issues, the National Mature Media Gold Award for books, the Communications Concepts APEX Grand Award for special booklets and article series, Association Trends Excellence in Association Publications book awards and Society of Professional Journalists newsletter awards.
