WASHINGTON — The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is pleased to announce it’s joining a coalition of more than 250 front-line and local organizations, major corporations, nonprofits, veterans service organizations, and prominent leaders in welcoming and supporting Afghan families evacuated from Afghanistan over the past four months.
Welcome.US is a non-partisan, not-for-profit initiative providing a single point of entry to channel the outpouring support of Americans who want to get involved by donating supplies, money, or time to frontline organizations; offering temporary housing; or sponsoring Afghan families as they start new lives in the United States.
“Without the selfless-service of Afghans who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with us during the war in Afghanistan, many of our veterans would not have made it home safely,” said Fritz Mihelcic, VFW national commander. “The time is now to return the favor and help resettle so many of our Afghan allies and their families forced to flee the only home they have ever known.”
Over the past few years, the VFW has urged Congress and previous administrations to recognize the contributions of Afghans allies during the Global War on Terror and to provide them with a path to settle peacefully outside of Afghanistan should they desire to do so. Since August, various VFW Posts and Auxiliaries across the country have already volunteered to support Afghan refugee families with food, clothing, shelter, and other resources as they begin life in the United States.
“Let’s welcome our new neighbors and show them how the VFW and America really are at their best,” Mihelcic said.
