The membership of VFW Post 1514 in Village Mills, Texas, is comprised of veterans from World War II to those of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. Despite widely varying ages and experiences, one similarity outweighs any differences and unites Post members: their commitment to service.
“From grunts to special forces, each veteran has a different story, yet we share the same ideals because we served!” said Post Commander Richard Moore.
Together, members are still serving their Texas community with an annual blood drive and by providing support services during the pandemic and following recent hurricanes. One of the most significant ways Post 1514 serves, though, is through its engagement and mentorship of area youth.
Each year, members look forward to visiting grade school, junior high and high school students to share lessons of history, patriotism and encouragement. Post members convey the story of the poppy, help students memorize the Pledge of Allegiance and learn its history, and encourage discussion on all things veteran related.
They encourage teenagers in their studies and help them participate in VFW essay contests to earn scholarships. Post members also lend support and offer advice to teens, including to those interested in joining the military. With students of all ages, they celebrate important dates like Loyalty Day and Memorial Day.
Even while devoting considerable time to younger generations, members of Post 1514 never lose sight of their top priority, which is to serve veterans.
“Our Post pulls together. During the pandemic and after the hurricanes, we served our community and veterans in ways we hadn’t imagined before. We maintained 100% of our members and even increased Post membership.
“Together,” Moore insists, “we are #StillServing!”
No matter the circumstances, Post 1514 never misses an opportunity to serve veterans and its community. The VFW is proud to honor its work and each of its members who are #StillServing.
If you’re a veteran with a #StillServing story to share, we want to hear from you.
