One Post in Michigan got a head start celebrating its 80th anniversary.
VFW Post 8872, located in the village of Port Sanilac, was officially chartered in December 1946, a little more than a year after the end of WWII. An incredibly active Post in the community, Post Commander Roger Bobby was more than excited to celebrate all the years of hard work the Post has accomplished.
One of the notable events of the Post, referred to by members as “the four corners,” is the act of establishing POW/MIA flags and other flags related to military service at local businesses, as well as public entities such as schools.
“Our members were glad for something to get together for and celebrate.” Bobby said. “It was great to recognize who we are and what we’ve done.”
Known as “the first port of refuge” for ships coming in from Lake Heron, Port Sanilac is a popular retirement destination. In anticipation of Post members, of which many are retirees, temporarily moving to Florida for the winter months, the Post decided on celebrating the anniversary on Oct. 7 at Blue Water Sports Bar and Grill.
VFW Department of Michigan Adjutant Barry Walter attended the dinner and presented Bobby and the Post a certificate of recognition for 80 years of faithful service in support of VFW.
“As a Post, we have a lot to be proud of over the past 80 years,” Bobby said. “Those of us who are current members are upholding the legacy of our Post and the role it has played in our community. We do this with the support of the membership and a generous community.”
Along with continuing their “four corners” tradition, the Post is eager to host more blood drives, coordinate parades and restore local monuments.
