VFW National Military Services Update
WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — VFW Post 6605 Commander Ben Damron knows it’s crucial to keep morale high for troops protecting our freedoms overseas. To help accomplish this, Post 6605 adopted the 116th Air Control Wing (ACW) through the VFW Military Assistance Program’s (MAP) Adopt-a-Unit. The 116th ACW isn’t just any unit to Post 6605 either; several of its members belong to Post 6605.
MAP, the outstretched hand between the VFW and the local military, offers support around the world. A big part of MAP is the Adopt-a-Unit program, whose goal is to develop supportive relationships with units during all phases of deployment to deliver the vast network of VFW resources available to the military.
Since Post 6605 adopted the 116th ACW in 2009, they’ve coordinated efforts to deliver more than 2,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies and 5,000 morale packages to deployed service members. The Post’s Ladies Auxiliary also sends packages every month to troops overseas.
“Our Post believes it is important that we do everything we can to support our troops overseas, and we will continue to do that,” said Damron. “We have been there and done that and know how important a package from home can be to the morale of our troops overseas.”
The 116th ACW showed Post 6605 just how much they appreciate everyone’s efforts. Members of the unit visited Post 6605 to thank them in person for their outstanding support. Col. William Welsh, Commander of the 116th ACW, Air National Guard element, along with other members of the wing, presented Damron and VFW Department of Georgia Adjutant Wayne Hagan, flags that had been flown in their honor in Afghanistan aboard the E-8 Joint STARS.
