Former Marine Linguist Pursues Educational Goals

'I’m so thankful to the VFW for the support'

“As a Marine, I learned how to adapt to uncertainty and persevere in difficult circumstances. I conducted regional threat analysis and worked closely with diplomatic and military leaders across the world.”Former Marine Pursues Goals

Robert Dahlhausen, 27, of Cincinnati, Ohio, served five years as a Corporal in the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit. After studying Arabic at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Calif., Dahlhausen deployed as a Linguist. He worked in countries across the Mediterranean, including Morocco, Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait.

“I worked with almost every unit we had, including our infantry, intel, combat journalists, and logistics units,” he said. “I also helped with international exercises in Morocco and Jordan.

“The most impactful part for me was seeing so many people across the world committed to building peace in troubled regions.”

Dahlhausen related that today, he is working to “understand other cultures and help affect American foreign policy.” He is currently studying World Economy and Business at The Ohio State University, and hopes to work as a trade advisor for the U.S. State Department.

He found out about the VFW's "Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship" a few years ago while getting a haircut at Sport Clips. He donated that day, and didn’t think of it again until a few years later, when he was looking to study abroad in Japan.

“I applied for the scholarship, and received money to help pay a year’s tuition. I’m so thankful to the VFW for the support.”

When asked what advice he had for other veterans looking to pursue their education, Dahlhausen said, “Don’t be afraid to step forward. Veterans have unique skills and perspectives that set us apart from our peers.”
