KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Memorial Day is a hallowed day for the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. This is a day to pay tribute to our heroic patriots who bravely rose up and fought for something greater than themselves, selflessly laying down their life for freedom.
As we gather and observe this Memorial Day, we carry on a tradition dating back to 1866, embracing the feeling of patriotism and pride while honoring the best and most noble of us all.
Freedom isn’t free, and it has been paid for with the lives of sons and daughters, husbands and wives, sisters, brothers and friends. Their debt is one that can never truly be repaid, but we can start by ensuring the youth of tomorrow understand the true cost of freedom.
This Memorial Day, the VFW encourages Americans to pause and reflect on the lives and service of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and the families they left behind. There is no better way to honor those who gave all than to remember them, and draw upon their selflessness to strengthen our spirit as a nation.
