Happy Birthday, America!

Despite celebrations being vastly different from years past, it’s important we don’t forget the true meaning of Independence Day

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – On July 4, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) celebrates the birth of our nation.

Fireworks over the US Capitol Building, Jefferson Memorial and the Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima memorialIndependence Day marks the declaration of independence of the United States. On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress declared that the 13 American colonies were no longer subject and subordinate to King George III, and were united, free and independent states.

And while the Fourth of July is known for its spectacular fireworks displays, cookouts, carnivals and ceremonies, it’s important we don’t forget the true significance and meaning of Independence Day.

On this 244th Independence Day, the 1.6 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliary asks all Americans to remember the service and sacrifice of the men and women who fought for our great nation in defense of freedom.

Happy birthday, America!
