Emergency Assistance Relieves Burden

'The grant helped with my mortgage payment, which greatly reduced my stress and gave me time to find work and budget my bills'

Veteran Kimmer Horsen, 42, served in the Army for 10 years. Among other things, the 9/11 attacks motivated her to enlist. Throughout a decade of service, Horsen was stationed around the world, including in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan.

Today, she lives in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, with her service dog, Macho. Horsen’s service-connected conditions include migraines, depression and Post Traumatic Stress.

While searching online for financial assistance, she came across the VFW’s Unmet Needs program and applied.

Army veteran Kimmer Horsen“The process was hassle free,” she said. “The grant helped with my mortgage payment, which greatly reduced my stress and gave me time to find work and budget my bills.”

Horsen hopes those who are considering donating to the VFW do so, insisting, “The veterans sure will be grateful.”

She continued, “As a veteran who suffers from psychiatric injuries, it’s an honor to be assisted by an organization that is there in an emergency — just like on the battlefield. Thank you.”
