The United States Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, established on October 13, 1775. It consisted of two armed vessels to cruise in search of munitions ships supplying the British Army in America.
From the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor to the Oct. 12, 2000, attack on USS Cole, the U.S. Navy has proven to be the most formidable force on the high seas. Battle after battle, the U.S. Navy has demonstrated time and time again the fortitude and resolve of its sailors.
As Navy personnel celebrate their 234-year history of service to the nation, the 1.6 million members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Auxiliaries want to say 'thank you.' We are proud of our sailors and salute them for continuing to protect our freedoms and defend world peace.
